The Gift of Simplicity

December 16th, 2020 10:29 AM by Barbara Doeringer

‘Tis a gift to be simple, ‘Tis a gift to be free,

‘Tis a gift to come down where we ought to be;

And when we find ourselves in the place that’s right,

“Twill be in the valley of love and delight.

                                                                         . . . . . . Nineteenth Century Hymn

During the hectic and very stressful holiday season particularly this year, we tend to forget the joy of simply leading a more simple life.  In this era of vast technology, we are usually looking for the latest “gadget” that will make our lives more convenient or our business more successful.   We must have the latest smart phone, computer, video game stations, or whatever device has just come on the market.   But once we begin to appreciate how much we already have, we can begin to feel what is truly essential for our happiness.

 Many people believe simplicity implies doing without.  But on the contrary, true simplicity means that we can be content and grateful, ready to give more of ourselves.  This year more than ever, the simple gift of time can mean so much and it costs so little.

 This holiday season finds many families displaced or struggling due to the loss of their homes, jobs or family members.  For those of us who still have a home and family to celebrate the holidays, be grateful and reach out to those who don’t.   Give a simple gift of love and compassion:  provide a meal, take flowers, have a heartfelt conversation, buy groceries, offer to help in some way.

 These simple gifts can elevate ordinary moments and change dreary lives.  They are the greatest gifts of all.  So, this holiday season, let us search our hearts and offer that gift of simplicity to someone yearning to be touched by it.  By doing so, you will have a very Merry Christmas!
